First search for extraterrestrial neutrino-induced cascades with IceCube
نویسنده
چکیده
We report on the first search for extraterrestrial neutrino-induced cascades in IceCube. The analyzed data were collected in the year 2007 when 22 detector strings were installed and operated. We will discuss the analysis methods used to reconstruct cascades and to suppress backgrounds. Simulated neutrino signal events with a E energy spectrum, which pass the background rejection criteria, are reconstructed with a resolution ∆(logE) ∼ 0.27 in the energy range from ∼ 20 TeV to a few PeV. We present the range of the diffuse flux of extra-terrestrial neutrinos in the cascade channel in IceCube within which we expect to be able to put a limit.

IceCube, a cubic kilometer detector at the South Pole, is the largest neutrino telescope currently taking data. Utilizing the transparent ice of Antarctica as a detection medium, IceCube digital optical sensors observe Cherenkov radiation from secondary particles produced in neutrino interactions inside or near the detector. Charged current nμ interactions create muon tracks, while charged curr...

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory includes a tightly spaced inner array in the deepest ice, called DeepCore, which gives access to low-energy neutrinos with a sizable surrounding cosmic ray muon veto. Designed to be sensitive to neutrinos at energies as low as 10 GeV, DeepCore will be used to study diverse physics topics with neutrino signatures, such as dark matter annihilations and atmospheric...

The IceCube Observatory is a km neutrino telescope currently under construction at the geographic South Pole. It will comprise 4800 optical sensors deployed on 80 vertical strings between 1450 and 2450 meters under the ice surface. Currently IceCube is operational and recording data with 40 strings (i.e. 2400 optical sensors). The IceCube Observatory will collect an unprecedented number of high...
متن کاملSearch for Neutrino-Induced Cascades with the AMANDA-II Detector
The first generation of large open water/ice Cherenkov telescopes has recently started operation. The goal of these instruments is the detection of an astrophysical high-energy neutrino flux which, if detected would add crucial information to the puzzle of the origin of the high-energy cosmic rays. AMANDA (Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array) is located at the geographical South Pole and...
متن کاملNeutrino astronomy with IceCube and AMANDA
Since the early 1990’s, the South Pole station in Antarctica has been the site of the development and operation of the world’s first ice-Cherenkov neutrino telescopes, AMANDA and IceCube. The AMANDA telescope was completed in 2000 and has been used to search for the first high-energy neutrinos from beyond the earth. The successor to AMANDA, IceCube, will be a kilometre-scale neutrino and air sh...
